Eat this, Chicago!

I just got back from one of the places listed below (Hot Doug’s) and I decided, since there are some food-lovers that read this blog, I ought to let people in on the semi-secret of Belmont Ave. (Chicago) eating.

Between California Ave. to the west and Western to the east (ironically), there are at least 3 phenomenal, must-visit restaurants here in Chicago. It’s a bit surprising that these places exist in the otherwise unremarkable neighborhood in which they’re located. Still, put at least one, if not all, on your list of places to eat if you find yourself in town. The best part, you can walk between all of them, so maybe try all three!

1. 90 Miles Cuban Cafe, 3101 N. Clybourn Ave.

– Mark my words, Cuban food is the next Chinese food to Americans. In other words, people of all backgrounds will soon start to discover Cuban food and will LOVE it! (But won’t be hungry afterwards). This place is my favorite Cuban restaurant in the city. Go get yo’self some plantain chips, son!

2. Hot Doug’s, 3324 N California Ave

– Hot Doug’s has been listed in every “top restaurants” list that exists. They make hot dogs and sausages from a variety of meats and with a dizzying array of sauces and toppings. Just read the menu and you’ll see why this place is special. Holds the distinction of being the only “non-fancy” restaurant listed in the top 50 restaurants in the world. Phenomenal! But beware…it retains its neighborhood feel at a price: you’ll be waiting in a line around the block most days. Trust me, though…it’s worth it.

3. Kuma’s Corner, 2900 West Belmont Ave.

– Quite simply: the greatest burgers ever. I don’t mean that in the hyperbolic “best cup of coffee” or “world’s largest fireworks store” sense. Literally, these are the best burgers. Reading the menu is like reading hard-rock poetry. The atmosphere (also literally) rocks. Eat here or I’ll never talk to you again. Kuma’s caveat: you’re going to go into a food coma after eating here, so devote a full afternoon.
